My dear husband of 44 years died today around noon, in our family room.

Not many people are blessed to share their lives with a person who had the integrity I always admired in John.

My sons and I extend our heartfelt thanks for innumerable acts of kindness, thoughtful notes and phone calls, and support shared in so many loving ways throughout this journey.

We also wish to thank Pathways Hospice Care, which provided valuable guidance, service and support during these past several months.

I will be in touch with details regarding John's Celebration of Life.

Linda, Nick, Andrew and Chris Hoff

To family and friends,

John Hoff was a very special guy - even in high school.  He was very bright, very friendly, and I particularly enjoyed his friendship.  I remember the high school reunion we had at a hotel on the plaza (one before last) and I was sitting with John, his wife, Pat Nash, his wife, Jim Mulkey (my high school boyfriend) and me and 2 others.  Jim Mulkey died recently and now John.  My condolences to his family

I am so sorry to hear of John's passing.  He was a very close friend in high school. My fondest memories with him are singing German songs and double-dating.  John was also a groomsman in my first wedding. Now two close friends, Jim Mulkey and John, are gone within 2 months.  My condolences to his family and other friends. I am currently in shock.

John was one of a kind! As Linda said in her announcement, John exemplified integrity throughout his life. He was also so much more. He was incredibly kind to everyone he interacted with. Although he was very intelligent, he was always just one of the guys. He had a self-deprecating sense of humor that endeared him to everyone. He was one of the most sensitive guys I've ever known - he would tear-up at seemingly mundane moments when something really moved him. He had a wonderful relationship with his amazing wife Linda and with his three intellectually-curious sons who all lived nearby in San Fran -- he and they would get together regularly and discuss literature, sports, politics, and everything in between. John and I became friends at SE and remained close throughout our lives. Our gang at SE included Dwaine Duvall, Jerry Ellsworth, Dick Lau, and Pat Nash and we had great times. John and Dick Lau went to Yale together. John and I went to Purdue for graduate school and got (believe it or not) PhD's in Math in '68. John moved to Sunnyvale, met and married Linda, and raised their sons. About 25 years ago (how time flies when you're having fun) we seriously reconnected. We and our wives would get together maybe twice a year on a road-trip or at each other's homes and have absolutely-hilarious times. We gave our memorable activities nicknames (the Linda Ronstadt Affair, the Passport Caper, etc) and just the mention of them would send us into uncontrollable laughter. I will remember John and our wonderful times together forever.
