Harry Crisson

Harry Bernard Crisson, storyteller, chef, avid outdoorsman, craftsman, lifelong coach and teacher, passed away unexpectedly on October 19, 2014, in Las Vegas. Harry was born Sept. 5, 1941, in Kansas City, the beloved only child of Harry C and Ann (Moser) Crisson. Harry graduated from Southeast High School in 1959 and received his B.A. in Math and Science from National College where he also was on the golf team. He completed his Masters degree in Education at UMKC in 1972. He was an Eagle Scout and Runner in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He worked on the camp staffs of Camp Lake of the Woods and the Bartle Scout Reservation and headed the staff at the Jayson Camps in Massachusetts. His desire to serve also led him to volunteer for many years with the American Red Cross on the Civil Defense and the Water Safety programs. Harry earned his lifetime teaching certificate and he taught and coached in the Park Hill, Hickman Mills, and Kansas City school districts. His love of people and travel took him to Europe, Scandinavia, the Middle East, former Soviet Union, and Mediterranean. He was especially fond of his time as a teacher and coach at The Community School in Teheran, Iran (an International School) where he organized the first American style football team, teaching the game to a team comprised of players from a dozen different countries. Those former students around the globe kept in touch with "Coach" for the remainder of his life. Harry's gregarious personality, kindness, and mirth made him memorable to all who met him. He leaves behind many treasured friends and cousins who are richer for his presence in their lives. His friends (brothers), Pat and Phil, will honor his wish to have his ashes placed in one of the scenic rivers where they spent so many memorable days floating and playing bluegrass music. A celebration of Harry's life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at his favorite meeting place, Kelly's Westport Inn.
